CSUSM Set for Triton Invitational

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's and women's track & field teams will take part in the two-day Triton Invitational at UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday in La Jolla.
 
LAST WEEKEND

  • CSUSM hosted the Mangrum Invitational last Friday before taking part in UC Irvine's Vince O'Boyle Track & Field Classic on Saturday.
  • Nick Melanese recorded an NCAA provisional time of 3:46.95 in the 1500-meter run.
  • Dre Johnson broke his own school record in the 100-meter dash at 10.58 seconds and later helped break the 15-year-old school record in the 4x100-meter relay with teammates Zavier Hidalgo, Jason Wells and Troy Thompson Jr. in 41.20 seconds.
  • Rasha Badrani began her outdoor season with NCAA provisionals in the 400-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles. Her 400-meter dash time of 54.67 seconds broke her own school record.
  • Badrani was subsequently named the FloCollege/CCAA Track Athlete of the Week.

TRITON INVITATIONAL

  • This will be the 32nd edition of the Triton Invitational.
  • The Cougars will be competing in the Triton Invitational for the ninth consecutive season and 21st time overall since first attending in 2000.
  • CSUSM has 120 entries for this year's meet.
  • In addition to host UC San Diego, the Cougars will go up against competitors from Azusa Pacific, Biola, BYU, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Bernardino, Central Arizona, Cerritos, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, CSUN, CUI, La Verne, Long Beach City College, Loyola Marymount, Mt. SAC, North Dakota, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Point Loma, Riverside City College, San Diego Mesa, San Diego, San Diego State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Vanguard, Western Oregon and Western Washington.

THE OLSON FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his seventh season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three individual CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five USTFCCCA All-West Region selections.
  • In 2022, Olson guided both teams to a combined three individual CCAA Championships, 13 All-CCAA selections and five outdoor and three indoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honors.
  • In 2023, the Cougars earned a combined five individual CCAA Championships, 19 All-CCAA selections, six outdoor and three indoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honorees under Olson's leadership.
  • In 2024, CSUSM had a combined five individual CCAA Champions, 16 All-CCAA selections and five outdoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honorees.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach for the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
