No. 8 CSUSM Begins Quest For Sixth Consecutive CCAA Title
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 8 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will look to win a sixth consecutive CCAA Championship team title this week in Santa Barbara, California. The tournament will take place at Sandpiper Club on April 21-23 with one round being played each day.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Cougars shared second place at the West Texas A&M Desert Invitational on April 1 in Tucson, Arizona.
- Kiara Hernendez collected runner-up honors with an 9-over 153 (73-80), one stroke behind Texas A&M International's Yuliana Yapur (143, -1).
NO. 2 REGIONAL RANKING
- The Cougars rank No. 2 in the West Region behind No. 1 Dallas Baptist and ahead of No. 3 St. Mary's (Texas), No. 4 West Texas A&M and No. 5 Texas at Tyler.
- Three other CCAA schools are featured in the top 20 – No. 6 Cal State LA, No. 10 Cal State East Bay and No. 12 Sonoma State.
- The 2025 NCAA West Regional will be held at La Paloma Golf course in Amarillo, Texas, on May 5-7.
- According to the NCAA Scoreboard powered by Clippd, Murr is ranked No. 2 in the nation behind No. 1 Amely Bochaton of Wingate.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
- CSUSM has been crowned the CCAA Tournament Champion each of the five times the tournament has been played, taking home the title in 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
- The 2020 and 2021 championships were canceled due to the COVID pandemic.
- The Cougars won last year's CCAA Tournament by 27 strokes with a 1-over 865 at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club in Santa Rosa, California, on April 24.
- For the fourth time in five CCAA Tournaments, a CSUSM golfer was the individual medalist as returning Cougar Regan Barton won with a 2-under 216 (70-69-75). CSUSM took the top three spots with Madison Murr taking home runner-up honors with a 1-under 215 (77-71-67) and Diana Delgado placing third with a 3-over 219 (75-72-72).
- Sandpiper Golf Club's inspiring combination of challenge and beauty brings participants to the edge of the Pacific Ocean with breathtaking ocean and mountain views from every hole.
- Golf Digest has rated the championship golf course at Sandpiper among the top 25 public golf courses in the country. It has played host to several professional tournaments, including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women's Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School.
- Cal State Monterey Bay will serve as host to this year's championships.
COUGAR OUTLOOK
- For the second consecutive year, the squad added two new Cougars in the lineup — freshmen Faith Hamstreet and Abby Sickles.
- The Cougars won their fifth consecutive CCAA Championship title in 2024, defeating second-place Cal State Monterey Bay by 27 strokes.
- Regan Barton become CSUSM's fourth CCAA Champion, recording a 2-under 214 at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club.
- After a fifth-place finish in the NCAA West Regional, CSUSM made its third appearance in the NCAA National Championships, finishing 12th in stroke play.
THE HUTTON FILE
- Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
- Hutton has been named CCAA Coach of the Year a total of seven times – six times on the women's side and one time on the men's side.
- The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
- CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022.
- Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
- In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside.
- In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
