CSUSM Extends Unbeaten Streak to Eight with 1-1 Draw in CCAA Opener

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The (RV) Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (4-0-4, 0-0-1 CCAA) extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-1 draw in its CCAA opener at Sonoma State (2-1-5, 0-0-1 CCAA) on Friday at Seawolf Soccer Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a CSUSM foul in the box, SSU was awarded a penalty kick. Jose Rios Lara then put a shot into the left side of the net to put the Seawolves up 1-0 in the 29th minute.
  • At the end of the first period, the Cougars had the edge in shots (9-3), shots on goal (3-1) and corner kicks (5-0).
  • After a battle of possession in the box following a CSUSM corner kick, Riley Patterson was able to put the ball into the bottom right portion of the goal from the middle of the box to knot the game at 1-1 in the 85th minute.

  • The Cougars' eight-game unbeaten streak continues to be the longest in the program's NCAA Division II era.
  • CSUSM is now tied for the best start by overall winning percentage in the team's Division II era at .750. The Cougars also started the 2018 season with a .750 winning percentage after going 6-2-0.
  • This is the second consecutive season CSUSM and SSU have ended a game in a draw.
  • The Cougars outshot the Seawolves, 15-7, but SSU had more shots on goal at 5-4.
  • Patterson's goal was his second of the season and eighth in four years at CSUSM.

  • A total of 28 fouls, six yellow cards and one red card were assessed, but the Cougars only accounted for 11 fouls and one yellow.
