Cougars Rebound with 80-65 Win Over Lumberjacks

ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (8-11, 7-6 CCAA) snapped a three-game skid as it led wire-to-wire in its 80-65 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt (4-14, 1-12 CCAA) on Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSUSM began the game with a 13-0 lead in the first five minutes of action.
  • The Lumberjacks made it a two-point game with a 15-4 run and cut the deficit to 17-15 on a Liyongwei Xie second-chance 3-pointer with 9:44 to play.
  • Just six minutes later, the Cougars back up by nine at 35-26 on a Tengan 3-pointer with 3:34 to go in the half.
  • CSUSM went into halftime with a 35-28 lead as Collins led all scorers with 13 points.
  • The Cougars tallied eight 3-pointers on 18 attempts (44.4%) in the first 20 minutes
  • CSUSM began the second half with a jumper by Uriah Foster and a fast-break layup by Pope to go up 39-28 in the first 45 seconds of the period.
  • A 9-0 run by the Cougars put CSUSM up by 21 points – its largest lead of the game – at 66-45 on a 3-pointer by Pope with 9:27 remaining.
  • CSUSM maintained at least a cushion of 13 or more points the rest of the way to claim the victory.
  • The Cougars were red hot from the floor in the second half at 65.4% (17-of-26) while holding the Lumberjacks to 46.7% (14-of-30).

 
FAST BREAKS

  • CSUSM ended the game shooting 55.8% (29-of-52) from the field while going 12-of-26 from beyond the arc (46.2%). Humboldt was 48.1% (25-of-52) from the field and 40% (6-of-15) from downtown.
  • The Cougars tallied more assists (16-11), more blocks (3-0) and committed fewer turnovers (19-10) than the Lumberjacks.
  • CSUSM led for all but 10 seconds of the game.
  • Collins led all scorers with 20 points and tallied his fifth game of the season with 20 or more points.
  • This was the Cougars' fifth consecutive win over the Lumberjacks and sixth consecutive victory over Humboldt when playing in Arcata.
  • CSUSM is now 10-5 in the all-time series against Humboldt and is 6-2 when playing in Arcata.
  • The Cougars are now back in a tie with San Francisco State for sixth in the CCAA standings with nine games remaining.
