CSUSM Wins CCAA Tournament Opener Against CSUDH, 5-2

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos (33-19) softball team recorded a 5-2 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Cougars' CCAA Tournament opening game on Thursday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Donnelly knocked out a 2-RBI double to center in the third inning to put CSUSM up 2-0.
  • The Cougars doubled their lead in the fourth on RBI singles by Lombardi and Donnelly.
  • In her first at-bat of the game, Kestler belted an RBI single through the right side to make it 5-0.
  • With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Toros hit back-to-back bases-loaded singles before CSUSM starter Jayline Sloss recorded a strikeout to end the game.

QUICK HITS

  • Sloss (16-8) tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits and five walks while fanning two batters.  
  • CSUDH's starter Ashley Wies (8-6) went 3.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks for the loss.
  • Donnelly's double raised her season total to 15, ranking second in the CCAA.
  • Donnelly tallied her team-leading 12th multi-RBI game, her third 3-RBI game of the season.
  • The Cougars registered their 36th double play of the season and remain the NCAA Division II leader.
  • With top-seeded Sonoma State losing both games on Thursday, CSUSM is now the highest seed remaining in the CCAA Tournament. 

UP NEXT
The Cougars will face Cal State East Bay at noon on Friday, May 2 at CSUSM Softball Field. The winner of that game will move on to the championship game while the loser faces Cal State Dominguez Hills in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m.
