CSUSM Opens Season with 9-1 Win Over Saint Martin's
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In its 2025 season opener, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (1-0) powered its way to a 9-1 win over Saint Martin's (0-1) on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints scored the first run of the season in the top of the first with an RBI single to center by Kyle Schabot that scored Damon Ingram, who got on base with a two-out walk.
- Saint Martin's lead didn't last long as CSUSM scored three runs in the bottom of the first on a pair of sacrifice flies by Cameron Mahaffy and Mateo Lake before an RBI single up the middle by Ethan Rivera made it 3-1.
- The Cougars made it 5-1 in the bottom of the third, as Lake scored on a double play before Dylan Unangst's RBI double scored Rivera.
- CSUSM tacked three more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single by Hayden Tregidga and an RBI single by Rivera to make it 8-1.
- The Cougars' final run of the day was a solo shot to center by Mahaffy to increase the lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth.

- After being hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Phoenix Sommay extended his reached-base streak to 44 games dating back to last season, setting a new program record.
- CSUSM starting pitcher Spencer Anderson (1-0) earned the win after striking out six on 87 pitches while allowing just one run on five walks and three hits in 5.0 innings.
- SMU starter Nikki Scott II (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks in 3.0 innings.
- The Cougars' bullpen of Trevor Eby, Sammy Murphy and Angel Barron combined to strike out seven and allowed just three hits and three walks in the final four innings.
- This was the first-ever meeting between CSUSM and Saint Martin's.
