Another Donnelly Walk-Off LIfts CSUSM Over Biola in West Regional Opener

SAN FRANCISCO – Behind a walk-off single by Paige Donnelly, the third-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team (39-20) collected a 3-2 victory over sixth-seeded Biola (38-20) to open the NCAA Division II West Regional on Thursday afternoon at SFSU Softball Field on the campus of San Francisco State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Biola put up two runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk and a RBI single by Maddie Granados.
  • In the bottom of the first, Paige Donnelly hit a one-out double to left center, advanced to third on a fly out to right field and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1 Biola.
  • CSUSM evened the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Delaney Prater.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Makenzie Guiliano led off with a single that dropped right behind the third baseman, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Madison Waymire and scored on Donnelly's single to center that the center fielder bobbled.

QUICK HITS

  • CSUSM starting pitcher Jayline Sloss got a no decision after going 6.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks. After the first inning, Sloss gave up one hit, one walk and hit two batters while throwing five scoreless innings.
  • Cougar relief pitcher Dahlia Fink (11-3) collected the win after tossing a scoreless seventh inning. She gave up a walk and a bunt single before closing out the top of the frame with a fielder's choice and two groundouts.
  • Biola pitcher DJ Symons (17-5) took the loss after going 6.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits, five walks and a wild pitch.  

UP NEXT
CSUSM will face second-seeded and host San Francisco State (38-18) at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 9 at SFSU Softball Field.
