Cougars Earn AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team was a recipient of the 2024 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the organization announced on Wednesday.

More than 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball programs maintained a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale), to earn the award for their classroom excellence during the recently completed academic year.

CSUSM posted a 3.607 team GPA for the 2023-24 academic year to earn the award for the very first time.

"This is such a great honor for our deeply committed student-athletes," CSUSM Head Coach Andrea Leonard said. "They are inspiring in their focus, determination and passion for learning in the classroom. I am so proud of their academic success!"

"I am incredibly proud of the amazing work that our volleyball student-athletes have done in the classroom this past year," CSUSM Interim Director of Athletics Morod Shah said. "This amazing award is a great reflection of our program and a testament to the commitment, dedication and hard work that our student-athletes have every day to be the best scholar-athletes they can be. I am also proud of the great job that our volleyball coaching staff has done to support our volleyball student-athletes this past academic year."

The AVCA's mission is to advance the sport of volleyball coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy, and professional development. The membership includes more than 9,500 collegiate, professional, high school, club, and youth volleyball coaches—primarily in the United States. The AVCA represents women's volleyball, men's volleyball, and beach volleyball coaches, and works to increase exposure and recognition for the sport of volleyball.
