CSUSM Suffers 3-0 Loss to No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (4-3-4, 0-3-1 CCAA) took a 3-0 loss to No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona (8-1-2, 3-0-1 CCAA) on Sunday at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute after a penalty kick goal by Max Laguna to the left side of the net following a Cougar foul.
  • After one half, CPP had the edge in shots (3-2) and corner kicks (2-1) while CSUSM led in shots on goal (2-1).
  • In the 77th minute, Laguna brought the ball down the right side of the field before a pass into the middle of the box to Daniel Gutierrez. After one dribble, Gutierrez made a low cross-body shot to the right corner of the goal to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
  • CPP finished up the scoring in the 83rd minute. Ethan Benham carried the ball down the field to just outside the top left corner of the box before passing it out to Sam Lena. Entering the left side of the box, Lena made a pass to Marc Birkelund in the middle of the box, who put a shot into the upper left side of the goal to make it 3-0.

 
QUICK KICKS

  • Both teams ended the game with six shots on goal, but CPP led in shots (11-8) and corner kicks (7-2).
  • Ryan Meinardus led the game with three shots and two shots on goal.
  • CSUSM had possession for 68% of the game but only 20% of its possessions occurred in CPP territory.
  • This was the Cougars' first game against a ranked opponent this season.
