Cougars Post Dominant 4-0 Road Shutout Against Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (4-4-3, 3-1-0 CCAA) posted a dominant 4-0 shutout on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay (3-5-2, 0-3-2 CCAA) on Friday night at Cardinale Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars got on the board with a low, rolling shot from Efren Nunez Dominguez in the 31st minute that went into the bottom left corner of the goal from outside the top of the box to put CSUSM up 1-0.
  • In the 40th minute, CSUSM made it a two-goal game as Daniel Schembri touched a deflected ball off a CSUMB defender before Hayden Kenny put the ball into the net past a stretching keeper from six yards out.
  • Despite being outshot 6-5 in the first half, the Cougars had more shots on goal at 3-1.
  • After receiving a pass from Nunez Dominguez, a long, powerful shot from 10 yards in front of the box by Oli Barrosa sailed over the keeper and into the top middle portion of the goal to give CSUSM a 3-0 lead in the 61st minute.
  • A corner kick from the left side by Nunez Dominguez went off the leaping keeper's hands before bouncing into the left side of the goal to put the Cougars up 4-0 in the 72nd minute.

  • CSUSM has now scored at least four goals in three of the last four matches.
  • This is the first time in the Cougars' NCAA Division II era (2015-present) that they've scored at least four goals in back-to-back matches. CSUSM strung together four consecutive wins with at least four goals in their final year of NAIA play in 2014.
  • CSUSM's four goals were its most in the all-time series against CSUMB.
  • Nunez Dominguez tallied goals six and seven for the season while logging his second assist.
  • Nunez Dominguez's five points for the night broke the program's Division II record and were the most by a Cougar in a single game since Eric Lopez's five against Antelope Valley in 2014.
  • Barrosa's goal was his second of the year, while Kenny tallied his first as a Cougar.
  • CSUSM outshot CSUMB by a 21-13 margin and had 10 shots on goal to the Otters' three. The Cougars' 21 shots were a season high.
  • With nine points, CSUSM is now tied for third in the CCAA standings with Cal State LA.
  • This was the Cougars' first win in Seaside since 2016.
  • The Cougars are now 6-3-2 in the all-time series against the Otters and are 3-3-1 when playing in Seaside.
