CSUSM Overcomes Early Loss with Nightcap Win at NCAA West Regional

SAN FRANCISCO – After dropping an intense, back and forth game against San Francisco State by a score of 13-9, the Cal State San Marcos softball team (40-21) answered with a 5-0 win over Biola (39-21) in a NCAA Division II West Regional elimination game on Friday afternoon at SFSU Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSUSM took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Delaney Prater and a failed pickoff play.
  • The Gators cut the lead in half with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the second.
  • Madison Waymire hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame down the left line.
  • SF State evened the game at 3-all on a CSUSM error and a Kira Nilson RBI double in the top of the third.
  • The Gators took their first lead of the game at 7-3 in the top of the fourth on a Marley Gonzales RBI single through the right side and a 3-RBI double to right center by Marissa Jordan.
  • The Cougars answered with a Waymire RBI single up the middle and a three-run homer by Paige Donnelly to even the game at 7-all. The inning continued with CSUSM taking advantage of a SFSU error that resulted in two runs to take a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Gators chipped away at CSUSM's lead with a Gonzales sac fly in the eighth and a solo home run by McDaniels in the sixth to even the game at 9-all.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Gators pushed four runs across on Daniella Guerrera's RBI single, a CSUSM error and a 2-RBI double by Shaunessy Cardwell to make it 13-9.

  • SFSU pitcher Elise Roy (13-8) collected the win after tossing 4.0 innings, giving up two unearned runs on one hit and four walks.
  • Cougar relief pitcher Dahlia Fink (11-4) took the loss after going 3.1 innings, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits and two walks.
  • Waymire collected her ninth home run of the season while Donnelly raised her season total to six.

  • CSUSM took a quick 3-0 lead in the opening frame on an Albayati RBI single, a Delaney Prater sac fly and Gianna Lombardi's RBI double.
  • In the second inning, a Madison Waymire RBI single down the third-base line gave CSUSM a 4-0 lead.
  • The Cougars extended their lead to 5-0 on a solo home run by Lombardi in the fifth inning.
  • The Eagles broke up a shutout with two runs in the sixth inning on a CSUSM error.

QUICK HITS

  • CSUSM starting pitcher Jayline Sloss (17-8) recorded the win after going 5.2 innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and six walks while fanning two batters.
  • Cougar relief pitcher Savannah Coyle (5) picked up the save after tossing 1.1 shutout innings.
  • Biola starting pitcher Kayla Bousquette (5-7) took the loss after going just 1.0 inning, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk.
  • Lombardi registered her third home run of the season.
  • This is the second time in the NCAA Division II era (2015-present) that the Cougars have reached the 40-win mark.
