No. 17 CSUSM Splits Thursday's Twinbill Against SSU

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – The No. 17 Cal State San Marcos softball team (18-5, 6-4 CCAA) earned a doubleheader split on Thursday against Sonoma State. The Cougars dropped game one,10-0, in five innings before bouncing back with a 4-3 victory in the night cap at Santa Rosa Junior College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Seawolves took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on Amari Houston's RBI double to left center and Jasmine Moreno's RBI single down the left line.   
  • Moreno took the ball down the other line to plate Houston in the second inning to give SSU a 3-0 lead.
  • CSUSM left runners on third in both the second, third and fourth innings.
  • The Seawolves put up two more runs in the bottom of the third, scoring on a wild pitch and a Houston RBI infield single to third.
  • SSU pushed five runs across on six hits including a 2-RBI triple by Lauren Mirtoni.
     

QUICK HITS

  • SSU starting pitcher Charlie Johnson (10-8) tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing only three hits while fanning three batters.
  • Cougar starting pitcher Jayline Sloss (6-3) had her shortest outing of the season, going only 0.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits.
  • Aneesa Arredondo hit a triple in the fourth inning, her first of the season and CSUSM's fifth.
  • The last time CSUSM was run-ruled was April 30, 2022 at Cal Poly Humboldt when the Cougars fell 10-2 in five-innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars went up 1-0 in the second inning after Aneesa Arredondo led off the inning with a double to right, advanced on a sac bunt by Makenzie Guiliano before scoring on a SSU error.
  • CSUSM extended its lead to 3-1 in the top of the third on an Alizabeth Ruiz sacrifice fly and scored twice on steal attempts that resulted in SSU errors.
  • The Seawolves attempted a comeback with a run in the bottom of the fourth on Lauren Martini's RBI single and two more in the fifth on a double steal and an Iris Bejarano RBI groundout.

QUICK HITS

  • CSUSM starter Dahlia Fink (6-1) earned the win after going 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and walking none.
  • Entering the game in relief, Jayline Sloss (2) picked up her second save of the season after tossing 2.2 hitless innings.
  • Seawolf starting pitcher Nichole Sarra (0-1) took the loss following 3.1 innings in the circle, giving up four runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks.
