Sloss Named CCAA Pitcher of the Year, Seven Cougars Earn All-CCAA Nods
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Entering the CCAA Softball Tournament as the No. 2 seed while hosting at CSUSM Softball Field this week, the Cal State San Marcos softball team placed seven on the 2024 All-CCAA team highlighted by Jayline Sloss being named CCAA Pitcher of the Year, announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Joining Sloss on the first team was first baseman Paige Donnelly and utility player Madison Waymire. Third baseman Jillian Albayati, shortstop Aneesa Arredondo, utility pitcher Savannah Coyle and outfielder Delany Prater earned All-CCAA second-team honors.
Starting in a conference-high 25 games in the circle, Sloss finished the regular season with a CCAA-low 1.31 ERA while leading the conference with four shutouts. The Bakersfield native is holding opponents to a .216 batting average in 160.2 innings. Sloss tallied a 15-8 record and 103 strikeouts with 41 of them looking. She has matched her career-best eight strikeouts in her last three outings. The right-hander picked up her first career CCAA Pitcher of the Week honor this season on Feb. 19. Sloss is the first Cougar to be named CCAA Pitcher of the Year and earned her second All-CCAA nod (second team in 2022).
Donnelly boasts a team-leading .358 batting average and .570 slugging percentage. She ranks second in the CCAA with 14 doubles while ranking third with 37 RBIs and 23 walks. The Poway native has recorded a team-best 11 multi-RBI games and is tied on the team with 14 multi-hit games. Donnelly put together the longest reached-base and hit streaks this season at 23 and 18 games, respectively. She was named CCAA Player of the Week once this season, raising her career total to three. This is Donnelly's third time earning All-CCAA honors and second time being selected to the first team.
Waymire is the CCAA leader with 45 runs (with a nine-run gap to second place) and 0.90 runs per game. Serving as CSUSM's leadoff batter for most of the season, Waymire is recording a .337 batting average and leads the team with 56 hits and seven home runs. The Rancho Cucamonga native had the second-longest reached-base streak at 21 games. Waymire has started in five different positions this season, 14 games at third base, 12 at left field, 12 as the designated player, 10 at right field and two at first base. She picked up her first CCAA Player of the Week honor this year. This is Waymire's first time being named to the All-CCAA teams.
Albayati is batting .319 with 44 hits including seven doubles and four home runs this season. She leads the team in sacrifice flies with three and has driven in 27 runs. The Anaheim native ranks second on the team with nine multi-RBI games. This is Albayati's second consecutive time being named to the All-CCAA second team.
Arredondo is recording the second-highest batting average on the team at .353. She has tallied 47 hits with six doubles, one triple and three home runs so far this season. As CSUSM's primary shortstop this season, Arredondo is tied with Donnelly with 14 mutli-hit games. The Yucaipa native collected her first CCAA Player of the Week honor in the final week of the season. This is Arredondo's first postseason conference honor.
A two-way player for CSUSM, Coyle has the third-highest batting average on the team at .348 with 46 hits including six doubles and one triple. She has drove in 24 runs while scoring 10 times. The Oceanside native is tied for third on the team with seven multi-RBI games. In the circle this season, Coyle has a 10-7 record with a 2.75 ERA and is holding opponents to a .272 batting average. She has tallied 65 strikeouts and walked only 22 batters. This is Coyle's third All-CCAA honor in her career.
In 80 at-bats, Prater has tallied a .313 batting average with 25 hits, 10 runs, three RBIs and one double. She is two-for-two on stolen bases and has walked four times. This is her first time being named to an All-CCAA team.
The Cougars (32-19) will make their third appearance in the CCAA Tournament on Thursday at 1 p.m., receiving a bye as the No. 2 seed. CSUSM will be hosting the conference tournament at CSUSM Softball Field from May 1-4. Tournament Central.
The winner of the tournament will receive the CCAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament beginning on May 9. The Cougars were the No. 5 seed in the most recent West Region poll.
