CSUSM Dominates CCAA Postseason Awards

CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's golf team once again dominated the All-CCAA honors, announced Wednesday by the league office. Breann Horn nabbed CCAA Golfer of the Year for the second consecutive year, Caroline Wales was selected CCAA Newcomer of the Year and Head Coach Greg Hutton received his fifth consecutive CCAA Women's Golf Coach of the Year honor.

Joining Horn and Wales on the 10-person All-CCAA first team was Madison Murr while Makenna Cabardo received honorable mention.

Horn, who is ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division II according to Golfstat.com, has a team-best 74.50 stroke average. The Lakeside native has finished in the top 10 in six tournaments with one win this academic year including a victory at Hawaii Pacific's Shark Shootout. Horn accumulated three CCAA Golfer of the Week honors this season to end her collegiate career with eight, the second most in conference program history behind former teammate Jaime Jacob (13).

The 2023 CCAA Tournament individual medalist, Wales placed in the top 10 six times this season.  The La Quinta native shared a victory at the Nick Turner Invitational in her second tournament at CSUSM which led to a CCAA Golfer of the Week nod. Wales ranks No. 59 in the latest Golfstat.com rankings.

Murr finished in the top 10 in eight of CSUSM's nine tournaments this season including five top-5 finishes. The Los Alamitos native was selected CCAA Golfer of the Week three times this spring. Murr's strongest performance was a share of second place in Cal State Bakersfield's Valley Invitational, a 54-hole Division I tournament. She is currently ranked No. 27 among NCAA Division II golfers according to Golfstat.com.

Cabardo posted five top-20 finishes this season, including a 10th-place finish at the 2023 CCAA Tournament. The Scottsdale, Arizona native began the season with back-to-back 13th-place finishes.

Hutton became CSUSM's first six-time CCAA Coach of the Year honoree in school history, five times as the women's coach and one time as the men's coach, which was announced yesterday. The Cougars defended their league crown for the fourth time by six strokes, carding a 901 in the three-day, 54-hole event.

With Horn's and Murr's three CCAA Golfer of the Week honors each and Wales picking up the honor, CSUSM golfers have earned the award a conference-high 32 times in 58 occurrences.

In the five years of the CCAA sponsoring women's golf, a CSUSM golfer has been named Golfer of the Year each time with Jaime Jacob taking the first three seasons and Horn earning the last two seasons.  The Cougars won three tournaments this season, including the 2023 CCAA Women's Golf Championship for a fourth time.

CSUSM is ranked No. 9 in the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) national poll and No. 8 in the Golfstat.com national poll.

The Cougars, who earned the automatic West Regional bid and are ranked No. 2 in the latest NCAA West Regional poll, are waiting for the announcement of the West Region field which will be posted on NCAA.com on May 1 by a press release.

This is the fourth consecutive season that CSUSM has placed at least three players on the All-CCAA first team.
