Introduction of Workplace Violence Prevention Plan and Upcoming Training

Dear CSUSM Employees,

Last fall the California legislature enacted California SB 553 and added Section 6401.9 to the California Labor Code, requiring covered California employers to take steps to prevent and respond to workplace violence.

While there is no Cal/OSHA regulation as yet, the labor code requires that the majority of employers in California establish, implement, and maintain a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan starting July 1, 2024, that includes the following elements:

  • Prohibiting employee retaliation
  • Accepting and responding to reports of workplace violence
  • Employee workplace violence training and communication
  • Emergency response
  • Workplace violence hazard assessments
  • Other requirements, such as maintaining a Violent Incident Log

Under the labor code, each employer is required to create their own plan specific to their workplace.  Therefore, each CSU campus is required to have their own plan.  Although they will be aligned as much as possible, CSUSM and CSUSM Corporation will also have separate plans.

Additionally, the CSU developed comprehensive online training that will be available to you shortly via the CSULearn online training portal. The training is designed to familiarize you with the protocols and procedures outlined in the prevention plan.

The campus has drafted a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan which will apply only to non-represented employees, students and the community while the campus engages in the bargaining process with the unions.
