NEW ORLEANS – Five members of the Cal State San Marcos men's and women's track & field teams earned outdoor All-Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday.
Kalathan Laiwa-McKay, Nick Melanese and Sankalp Shastri earned the honor on the men's side while Rasha Badrani and Jordyn Brooks took home the honor on the women's side.
The top five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of a top-three ranked relay team.
Laiwa-McKay earned All-Region honors in the shot put for the third consecutive season as he led the West Region and ranked seventh nationally with a mark of 18.25 meters at the Franson Last Chance, beating his school record by .43 meters.
Melanese earned All-Region honors for the third time overall and the second time in the 800-meter run. He recorded the third-best time in the West Region at 1:49.94 at the Franson Last Chance, posting his best time of the year.
Shastri earned All-Region honors for the first time as he had the region's third-fastest 1500-meter time at 3:45.35 at the Franson Last Chance. His personal best was also the third-fastest time in program history.
Badrani earned All-Region honors in both the 400-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles. This was her third time earning the honor in the hurdles and first time in the dash. Badrani had the nation's top hurdles time at 57.59 while her dash time of 52.72 led the region and ranked seventh nationally.
Brooks earned All-Region honors for the first time in the long jump as she recorded a wind-aided mark of 5.96 meters at the CCAA Championships while earning bronze for the event.
Since 2018, the men's team has had 21 USTFCCCA All-Region performances while the women's team has tallied 11.
