SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Kalathan Laiwa-McKay of men's track & field and Madison Murr of women's golf have been named the Cal State San Marcos Student-Athletes of the Month for May 2025.
The CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.
Laiwa-McKay earned USTFCCCA All-America first-team honors after finishing sixth in the shot put at the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships while also earning All-Region honors. The senior from Ukiah also won CCAA Championship in the shot put for the third consecutive year while taking bronze in the hammer throw. Laiwa-McKay broke his own school record in the shot put at 18.25 meters at the Franson Last Chance, ranking seventh nationally.
Murr won the 2025 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Individual National Championship with a 14-under 202 (69-64-69) at the NCAA National Championships, becoming the program's second national champion in team history. The redshirt senior from Los Alamitos was subsequently named the NCAA Division II PING Co-Player of the Year by the WGCA and was named to the WGCA All-America first team and the All-West Region team.
