CSUSM Snaps Skid with 1-1 Draw Against No. 21 Chico State
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (4-7-6, 0-7-3 CCAA) snapped a four-game skid with a 1-1 draw against No. 21 Chico State (10-2-5, 4-1-5 CCAA) on Sunday at The Cage.
GOALS
CSUSM – 18' Blake Haseyama (Assisted by Ryan Meinardus)
CHICO – 66' Miles Rice (Unassisted)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM got on the board first in the 18th minute. A long CSUSM free kick from its own box went off the head of a Chico player before Ryan Meinardus headed a pass over to Blake Haseyama in Chico's box. From midway in the box on the right side, Haseyama took a shot that barely missed the encroaching Wildcat keeper and went into the center of the goal to put the Cougars up 1-0.
- The Cougars led the first half in shots (5-2), shots on goal (2-0), corner kicks (2-1) and possession (56%-44%).
- In the 66th minute, a shot by Silas Sells was blocked by CSUSM defender before landing at the feet of Miles Rice, who immediately put a shot into the right side of the goal to even the match at 1-1.
- The Wildcats nearly took the lead in the 87th minute as a would-be goal was waived after Chico was ruled offside.
- With five seconds remaining, the Cougar almost put the game away, but a high shot by Meinardus from the right side of the box sailed over the goal and ended the game in a draw.
QUICK KICKS
- CSUSM ended the game with the edge in shots (12-9), shots on goal (4-2) and possession (56%-44%) while Chico took more corner kicks (3-2).
- Haseyama's goal was the first of his collegiate career while Meinardus' assist was his second of the season, giving him a team-high 18 points.
- This was CSUSM's third game against a ranked opponent this season and was the first non-loss to a ranked opponent since tying then-No. 11 Chico in the first round of the CCAA Tournament last season before advancing on penalty kicks.
- This was the fourth consecutive draw between the Cougars and Wildcats since 2022 and the third 1-1 score.
