CSUSM Blanks CUI in 1-0 Shutout

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (2-0-1) posted a 1-0 shutout against Concordia University Irvine (1-1-0) on Wednesday at The Cage.

GOALS
CSUSM – 30' Ryan Meinardus (Unassisted)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the 30th minute, Meinardus put the Cougars on the board. Dribbling around some defenders in the box, Meinardus put a low shot into the bottom left corner of the goal past the keeper's outstretched hand and gave CSUSM a 1-0 lead.
  • After 45 minutes, CSUSM still had a one-goal lead while each team had six shots.
  • The Cougars kept the shutout alive in the second half as none of the Golden Eagles' seven second-half shots found paydirt.

QUICK KICKS

  • This was CSUSM's second consecutive win over CUI, and it was the Cougars' first win over the Golden Eagles in San Marcos since 2017.
  • Meinardus' goal was his team-leading third of the season. He has scored each of CSUSM's last three goals, and he has been involved in every Cougar goal this season.
  • CSUSM and CUI are now knotted at 6-6 in the all-time series.
  • The Golden Eagles outshot CSUSM at 13-11, but the Cougars had the edge on corner kicks at 5-4.
  • Brooklyn Baker led the Cougars with three shots while he and Meinardus each put two shots on goal.
  • Tony Flores tied his career high with seven saves. He also tallied seven against CUI last year.
