Cougars Stumble Against Sea Lions

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (3-2-1) was unable to overcome a two-goal deficit as it fell 3-1 to Point Loma (4-3-0) on Wednesday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the 12th minute, a PLNU pass into the box found the foot of a CSUSM defender on a block attempt but was inadvertently put into the back of the net to give the Sea Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • CSUSM knotted the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute as Ibarra made a sliding shot just to the left of the goal after a cross-box pass from the right side by Brunetto and put the ball into the upper left corner of the goal.
  • Just before halftime, the Sea Lions retook the lead at 2-1 in the 44th minute. After a shot from the top of the box by Calero went off the crossbar, Buck picked up the rebound and put the ball into the back of the net from the penalty marker.
  • In the 66th minute, a pass to the center of the box by Burgos Lara found Ruiz, who made a pass to his left and found the foot of Calero, who put a sliding shot into the right corner of the net from just in front of the goal to give PLNU a 3-1 lead.

  • CSUSM ended the game with a 10-7 shot advantage while PLNU had more shots on goal at 4-3.
  • The Cougars had a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.
  • PLNU won its fourth consecutive game in the series.
  • Ryan Meinardus led the Cougars with three shots while PLNU's Felix Calero led the game with four.

CSUSM will play the sixth and final game of its homestand while wrapping up non-conference play against CCAA foe Cal State East Bay on Saturday at 3 p.m. Prior to the game, CSUSM will honor seniors Aaron Alvarez, Kian Aminloo, Giovanni Marsh, Jesus Mentado, Raul Meza and Derek Westwood.
