Cougars Set to Compete at CCAA Championships

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos men's golf team will compete at the CCAA Championships on April 21-23 in Santa Barbara, California. The tournament will be played at Sandpiper Golf Club with one round each day. 


LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars concluded the regular season with a ninth-place finish at the Hanny Invitational on April 15 in Turlock. 
  • Nick Mouser was CSUSM's top golfer after carding a 3-under 213 for a share of 11th place. 


NO. 7 REGIONAL RANKING

  • The Cougars sit in seventh place in the West Region rankings. 
  • Five CCAA schools are ahead of CSUSM – No. 1 Cal State East Bay, No. 2 Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 4 Chico State, No. 5 Sonoma State and No. 6 Stanislaus State, with  No. 8  Cal State San Bernardino right behind the Cougars. 
  • Cal State San Bernardino will host the 2025 West/South Central Regional on May 9-11 at Victoria Club in Riverside, California.
  • CSUSM and CSULA hosted the 2023 CCAA Men's and Women's Golf Championships at Victoria Club.

    CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

    • CSUSM is making its eighth appearance at the CCAA Championships. 
    • Cal State Monterey Bay is the defending CCAA Champion after carding a 16-under 848. CSUMB's Simon Bjorken was the individual medalist with a 10-under 206. 
    • CSUSM took third at the 2024 CCAA Champoinships, finishing with a 10-under 854. Patrick Jaksch was the Cougars' top golfer with a 4-under 212, tying for seventh place. 
    • The Cougars claimed the program's first-ever conference team title in 2023 with a 10-under 854 (278-290-286), claiming a one-stroke victory over second-place Cal State Monterey Bay (855, -9). 
    • Matt Pennington was crowned the 2022 CCAA Individual Medalist, CSUSM's first in program history, after finishing the three-round tournament with a 2-under 214 (75-67-72). 
    • Sandpiper Golf Club's inspiring combination of challenge and beauty brings participants to the edge of the Pacific Ocean with breathtaking ocean and mountain views from every hole. 
    • Golf Digest has rated the championship golf course at Sandpiper among the top 25 public golf courses in the country. It has played host to several professional tournaments, including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women's Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School.
    • Cal State Dominguez Hills will serve as this year's host. 

       
    COUGAR OUTLOOK

    • With nine returners from the 2023-24 team, this year's squad has only one new face with the addition of Owen Otto
    • The 2023-24 team finished in the top 5 in seven of its 11 tournaments last year. 
    • The Cougars saw last season come to an end with a 16th-place finish in the NCAA West/South Central Regional Championship. 


    THE HUTTON FILE

    • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
    • Hutton has been named CCAA Coach of the Year a total of seven times, six times on the women's side and one time on the men's side. 
    • The CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
    • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
    • In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside. 
    • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. 
    • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
