CSUSM Splits Doubleheader Against CPP
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (13-13, 8-9 CCAA) split its Saturday doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona (9-23, 6-17 CCAA), winning the first game 10-6 before falling 6-4 in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- A sacrifice fly by Marco Malerba put CPP up 1-0 in the top of the second.
- CSUSM countered with a five-run inning in the bottom of the second on a two-run double by Marco Pirruccello, an RBI single by Phoenix Sommay and RBI bunt single by Garrett Teunissen.
- The Broncos narrowed the gap to 5-3 in the top of the third with sac fly from Johnny Pappas and an RBI single up the middle by Beau Betten.
- After Tyler Weaver stole second, an errant throw from the catcher allowed Mateo Lake to trot home and give the Cougars a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the third.
- Pappas hit an RBI single through the left side in the top of the fourth to make it a 6-4 game.
- CPP cut the deficit to 6-5 with an RBI double from Robbie Treto in the top of the fifth.
- A Bronco throwing error to first on a single by Ethan Rivera allowed Trey Becker to score before Weaver hit an RBI single up the middle to make it an 8-5 game in the bottom of the fifth.
- Becker gave the Cougars a 10-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run blast to left.
- A solo shot by CPP's Clay Porter was the final run of the game to make it 10-6 in the top of the seventh.
- With two-on, nobody out and the tying run on deck, Nate Brouse came on in relief in the top of the eighth and proceeded to get his second save of the season on one strikeout and a hit allowed in 2.0 innings.

- CSUSM reliever Masen McDonnell (1-0) earned the win after striking out three while allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk in 2.1 innings.
- CPP starter Dylan Esquival (1-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 4.1 innings while striking out three.
- The win gave CSUSM a 2-0 lead for the series.
- Sommay earned his team-leading ninth multi-hit game of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM began its portion of the first inning with a leadoff homer from Phoenix Sommay to take an early 1-0 lead.
- CPP scored five unanswered runs in the second, third and fourth innings on RBI singles from Christian Gomez and Marco Malerba, a solo homer from Gomez and a two-run double by Julian Angulo to take a 5-1 lead.
- After scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-2, Trey Becker hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth on a solo shot before an RBI triple from pinch-hitter Victor Castaneda closed the gap to 5-4.
- The Broncos went up 6-4 in the top of the seventh on a solo homer from Malerba.
- The Cougars were unable to get another rally going in the bottom of the seventh as Andrew Campbell came on to close and earned back-to-back strikeouts before a game-ending flyout to center to earn the save.

- Bronco starter Anthony Vasquez (1-1) earned the win after striking out six while allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch in 4.2 innings.
- Cougar starter Russ Pettis (1-1) took the loss after allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two. He exited the game after 2.0 innings of work when a hard liner when off his foot.
- CPP's win snapped an eight-game losing streak dating back to March 16 against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
- Becker's and Sommay's homers were each their third of the year.
