SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (11-12, 6-8 CCAA) will return to CSUSM Baseball Field for a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona (8-21, 5-15 CCAA) beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. The series will continue with a noon doubleheader on Saturday before wrapping up on Sunday at noon.
 
LAST WEEKEND

• After earning a 10-9 win in the series opener at San Francisco State on Friday, CSUSM followed that with losses of 13-5, 2-1 and 3-1 on Saturday and Sunday.
• Garrett Teunissen batted in eight of the Cougars' 16 runs, including hitting two three-run homers.
• Nolan Long became CSUSM's all-time record holder for strikeouts on Sunday with the 174th of his career. He ended the day at 176 after throwing four strikeouts in the game.

 
COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

• The Cougars have laid down the sixth-most sacrifice bunt in Division II at 25 this season.
• CSUSM's pitching staff is striking out a CCAA-high 9.4 batters per nine innings, ranking 30th nationally.
• Cougar batters have been hit by a pitch 47 times this season, leading the conference.
• CSUSM has drawn the third-most walks in the league at 110.
• With an on-base percentage of .392, the Cougars are third in the CCAA.
• Averaging 1.26 stolen bases per game, CSUSM ranks fourth in the conference.
• Ethan Rivera is the second-toughest player to strikeout in the league at 17.0 at-bats between strikeouts.
• Spencer Anderson has thrown the sixth-most strikeouts in the CCAA at 34, averaging 8.91 per per nine innings.
• Jordan Townley's 8.04 hits allowed per nine innings are the fifth fewest in the CCAA while his 1.31 WHIP ranks 13th.
• Townley and Anderson have the eighth- and 12th-best ERA's in the conference at 3.45 and 3.67, respectively. 

COUGARS AGAINST THE BRONCOS

• CPP enters the week on a six-game skid after getting swept in four games at home against Cal State LA this past weekend.
• The Broncos are currently 10th in the CCAA standings with a 5-15 conference record.
• CPP has won just one of its 11 road games this season.
• All of the Broncos' CCAA series to this point have been against five of the top six teams in the conference standings.
• CSUSM and CPP last met in the 2024 NCAA West Regional where the Broncos earned a 13-5 win.
• The Cougars and Broncos have split the regular-season series with each other for the past two years.
• CPP has a commanding 24-6 lead in the all-time series and is 8-4 when playing in San Marcos.
• The Broncos have the eighth-best batting averaging in the CCAA at .279 and ninth-best ERA at 6.07.
• Brent Cota leads the Broncos and ranks eighth in the conference with a .380 batting average.
• Dylan Esquival has a team-best 36 strikeouts for CPP, ranking fifth in the league.

2025 OUTLOOK

• CSUSM was picked to finish third in the 2025 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
• The Cougars' roster of 39 includes 19 transfers, 14 returners and six freshmen.
• CSUSM has 18 pitchers in its arsenal, with 15 right-handers and three southpaws.
• The Cougars have 22 position players, including one two-way player.
• All but seven Cougars are upperclassmen.

THE GARCIA FILE

• Head Coach Jose Garcia enters his third season in San Marcos after taking over the CSUSM baseball program on Aug. 1, 2022.
• Garcia was the 2024 CCAA Coach of the Year in just his second season as a head coach. The Cougars finished second in the CCAA standings and made their first-ever appearances in the NCAA West Regional and CCAA Tournament. CSUSM's 27-21 overall record and 26-13 conference record were the program's best since joining NCAA Division II in 2016.
• The Cougars ended the 2023 season with an overall record of 20-25 and finished ninth in CCAA play at 14-21.
• Garcia came to CSUSM from fellow CCAA member Chico State where he was the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Wildcats.
• Joining Chico's staff as a student assistant in Fall 2012, Garcia helped the Wildcats notch 286 victories, seven postseason appearances, two CCAA Championships, one NCAA West Region Championship and one College World Series appearance in 10 years with the program.
• Serving as Chico's primary hitting and infield coach, Garcia coached the Wildcats' offense to a conference-record .344 team batting average while assisting the team to a 34-15 overall record in 2022 despite only returning seven players from the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
• In 2017, Garcia helped Chico to another CCAA record with a win-loss total of 34-4 in conference play while also helping the team to an NCAA Division II-best .983 fielding percentage.
• Garcia is a graduate of Chico State and earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in coaching. He later earned his master's degree in School and Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Positive Coaching from the University of Missouri in 2017.
• Garcia has a career record of 57-55 (.509).
