Cougars Split Doubleheader with No. 24 Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (21-17, 16-13 CCAA) split its doubleheader at No. 24 Cal State Monterey Bay (26-14, 19-12 CCAA) on Friday, falling 23-0 in the first game before rebounding with a 6-4 win in the second game at the Otter Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Otters scored in all but the sixth inning, putting up 23 hits to the Cougars' four while CSUSM also committed four errors.

 
QUICK HITS

  • Otter starter Henry Proger (3-2) earned the win after striking out five while allowing just two hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 7.0 innings.
  • Cougar starter Zach Coleman (2-6) took the loss after giving up nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out one in 1.2 innings.
  • The Otters' win snapped a three-game winning streak by the Cougars in the all-time series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • An RBI groundout by Evan Stauch in the bottom of the first gave CSUMB a 1-0 lead.
  • CSUSM erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Zavien Watson, a two-run double by Cameron Mahaffy and a sacrifice fly by Fisher Pyatt to go up 4-1.
  • A wild pitch, an RBI double by Noah Zerutche and an RBI single by Jacob Dressler scored three runs for the Otters and knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Cougars retook the lead in the top of the eighth as Marco Pirruccello scored on a passed ball before Pyatt's second sacrifice fly of the game scored Evan Scalley to make it 8-6.

 
QUICK HITS

  • CSUSM reliever Nolan Long (2-0) earned the win after striking out four while allowing just two hits and a walk in 2.2 innings.
  • CSUMB reliever Jacob Parks (0-1) took the loss after allowing two earned runs on three hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch while striking out two in 3.0 innings.
  • The win put the Cougars back ahead in the weekend series at 2-1 and guaranteed a series split at the very least.
  • This was CSUSM's 12th win against a ranked opponent in the program's NCAA Division II era (2016-present). Eight of those wins have come against CSUMB since 2022.
