Cougars Earn 10-9 Win in Series Opener at SF State
SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (11-9, 6-5 CCAA) opened its series at San Francisco State (12-13, 8-9 CCAA) with a 10-9 victory on Friday afternoon at Maloney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to right to score Phoenix Sommay.
- A five-run top of the second that came on an RBI double by Jake Callahan, an RBI single by Sommay and a three-run homer by Garrett Teunissen gave CSUSM a 6-0 lead.
- An RBI single by Nicholas Allred, a two-run triple by Daniel Murillo and a sacrifice fly by Justin Johnson narrowed SF State's deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the second.
- The Gators tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer by Kyle Olimpia.
- A leadoff homer by Michael Cunningham and squeeze play by Derek Laferriere put SF State up 8-6 in the bottom of the fourth.
- CSUSM knotted the game at 8-all in the top of the fifth with an RBI single by Marco Pirruccello before getting into a rundown while Cameron Mahaffy scored.
- Teunissen notched his fourth RBI of the day in the top of the sixth with a go-ahead RBI single to give the Cougars a 9-8 lead.
- Ethan Rivera knocked in CSUSM's 10th with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh to make it 10-8.
- In the bottom of the ninth, SF State scored on a one-out sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 10-9. After a walk put runners on first and second with two outs, CSUSM went to Nolan Long out of the bullpen, who got a flyout to right on five pitches to win the game and earn his third save of the year.

- CSUSM reliever Masen McDonnell (1-0) picked up the win after striking out four while allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk in 4.0 innings.
- SF State reliever Nathan Shinn (4-2) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out four in 6.0 innings.
- Teunissen's homer was his third of the year.
- This was the Cougars' fifth consecutive regular-season win against the Gators dating back to last season.
