HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (3-6, 1-0 CCAA) opened CCAA action with a four-set victory at Cal State East Bay (4-4, 0-1 CCAA) on Friday night at Pioneer Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game had six ties and five lead changes until the 11-all point, where CSUSM took the lead for good on a Goff kill. A kill by Sofia Hedqvist recorded the opening-set victory for CSUSM at 25-21.
- East Bay came out strong in the second set by taking a quick lead and never allowing CSUSM to catch up, eventually evening the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 win.
- The Cougars led wire-to-wire with only four ties prior to the 10 point mark, taking its largest lead at 16-11 on a block by Bakken and Jessica Thomas. CSUSM broke a 23-all tie with a Pioneer service error before Hedqvist once again notched a kill for the set win at 25-23.
- The fourth and final set of the match had eight lead changes and six tie scores with CSUSM going on a 7-1 run to take a 19-13 lead before East Bay came rallying back to even the set at 21-all. Barr recorded the final kill of the match to hand CSUSM the set win at 25-23.
QUICK HITS
- The win evens the all-time series between the Cougars and Pioneers at 6-6.
- This is CSUSM's second win in program history in Pioneer Gymnasium with its first coming in 2019 with a sweep over the Pioneers.
- This was the first CCAA opener victory on the road for the Cougars who are now 2-5 in their conference openers. The previous CCAA opener win came in 2018 with a four-set victory over then-CCAA member UC San Diego in The Sports Center.
