No. 14 CSUSM Plays Midweek Doubleheader at Biola on Tuesday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 14 Cal State San Marcos softball team (15-4, 5-3 CCAA) will make up its previously postponed doubleheader at Biola (9-7, 3-1 PacWest) this week, traveling to La Mirada on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. twinbill.  

PREVIOUS WEEKEND

  • The Cougars dropped three of four at San Francisco State last weekend.
  • After falling in Friday's doubleheader 6-1 and 4-3, the Cougars bounced back with a 7-6 win in Saturday's first game before dropping a 7-2 decision in the series finale.          
  • Jillian Albayati went 6-for-14 for a .429 batting average that included three runs, two RBIs and one home run. 
  • Only 11 of 23 runs given up by the CSUSM pitching staff were earned runs as the Cougars committed eight errors in the four games.                                   

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM remains in the top spot in the CCAA with a .342 batting average, ranking 29th in NCAA Division II. 
  • The Cougars also lead the CCAA in on-base percentage (.413) and slugging percentage (.468). 
  • With four double plays in Saturday's doubleheader, CSUSM moved into a three-way tie for most double plays (11) in the CCAA with San Francisco State and Stanislaus State. 
  • CSUSM has the second-highest average in the conference in double plays (0.58) and home runs (0.53) per game. 
  • The Cougars have the third-best fielding percentage in the CCAA at .968. 
  • CSUSM is averaging 5.32 runs a game, the second highest in the CCAA. 
  • The Cougars have tallied eight sacrifice flies this season, second highest in the CCAA and 23rd in Division II. 
  • CSUSM has registered 171 hits this season, ranking second in the CCAA. 
  • Four Cougars are ranked in the top 10 in the CCAA in batting average – Savannah Coyle ranks third with a .444 avg., followed by Delaney Prater in fourth (.432), Jillian Albayati in fifth (.429) and Paige Donnelly in ninth (.404). 
  • Coyle is ranked ninth in Division II with three saves so far this season. 
  • Donnelly's 17 RBIs rank third in the CCAA. 
  • Albayati is fifth in the nation with 3.33 assists per game. 
  • Jayline Sloss has the fifth-best ERA in the CCAA at 1.64. 
  • Madison Waymire ranks fourth in the conference with 16 runs while Albayati is ninth with 14 runs.

MIDWEEK NON-CONFERENCE TWINBILL

  • The Eagles won three of four in their PacWest Conference opening series, falling in the series opener 9-4 before clinching the final three games, 4-3 (9 inn.), 8-3 and 13-5 (6 inn.). 
  • Biola is 5-4 against CCAA opponents this season that included a four-game series split with then-No. 15 Cal State Dominguez Hills and a twinbill sweep at Stanislaus State. The Eagles dropped games to Cal State East Bay and Chico State while recording a win over Sonoma State in their season opener.

  • Biola's pitching staff has tallied a conference-best four shutouts.

  • CSUSM was picked to finish first in the 2025 CCAA Preseason Softball Coaches Poll. 
  • The Cougars' roster of 26 consists of 17 returners, one transfer and eight freshman. 
  • Athletically, the Cougars are made up of four redshirt seniors, six seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and eight freshman. 
  • The Cougars' 53-game schedule includes 28 home contests and 25 road games.


THE ROBINSON FILE

  • Head Coach A.J. Robinson was promoted to the top spot on July 31, 2024. 
  • As the program's assistant coach from 2022-24, Robinson helped guide CSUSM to three NCAA Division II West Regional appearances, an NCAA National Championship appearance, a West Regional Championship, a CCAA Regular-Season Championship and a CCAA Tournament Championship.
  • For the 2021 season, Robinson was a volunteer assistant coach at San Diego State and helped the Aztecs to an overall record of 28-16.
  • Robinson's first stint at CSUSM was as a volunteer assistant coach from 2018-20 where he was named CSUSM Athletics' Volunteer Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020.
  • Robinson was the founder and president of The Factory Softball Club in San Diego until 2024. In 2018 and 2019, he and his coaching staff earned West Region Travel Ball Coaching Staff of the Year honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
