Strong Start Falls Short in Five-Set Heartbreaker to Chico
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (4-20, 3-13 CCAA) dropped a five-set heartbreaker (25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 16-25, 9-15) to Chico State (10-13, 6-10 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Set 1: CSUSM used a 5-0 run behind two service aces from Ebony Lewis and a pair of kills from Jules Tindall and Addison Kranz to take a 5-2 lead. The Cougars extended their advantage with a 6-1 run midway through the set, capped by a Kranz kill, and closed it out 25-18 on another Kranz kill.
- Set 2: CSUSM jumped out to a 10-2 lead with Annika Blas-Cedeno serving and Kranz continuing to dominate offensively. Chico State rallied late, but CSUSM held firm with Trower and Blayne Seligmiller combining for key blocks and kills to win 25-19.
- Set 3: Chico State responded with a strong offensive set, hitting .314. CSUSM led 17-16 before the Wildcats closed on a 9-4 run, including three kills from Maria Wahl, to take the set 25-21.
- Set 4: Chico State controlled the set with a 7-1 run early and never trailed. Despite a late push from CSUSM, Wahl and Cashe Olswang combined for seven kills to secure the 25-16 win.
- Set 5: Chico State began with a 6-2 run before CSUSM rallied back to cut the Wildcat lead to 9-7 on an attack error. Chico State repeated its 6-2 run to close the match with a kill from Wahl to win 15-9.

- CSUSM registered a season-best 14 blocks while holding Chico State to seven.
